Itinerary

The itinerary includes Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Venice, Ravenna, Milan, Paris, Chartres, and Versailles.  We will visit many of the major cathedrals, monuments, and museums in these cities, with an emphasis on sites with particular educational significance.  See also the "Travelink brochure with detailed itinerary" above.

Registration

1) Send to Union University:

a) The Union University Study Abroad Application with $25 or $50 fee (see Application for address).

b) The completed signature page of the Passenger Terms and Conditions.

Note: Your Travelink Registration Form will not be processed until Union has received your application with fee and the signature page, and you have been approved for participation.

2) Send to Travelink:  the Travelink Registration Form (see Form for address) along with a non-refundable deposit of $300 by the deadline of September 29 (the earlier the better, as spaces are limited).

3) If you so choose, purchase travel insurance within 14 days of registration with Travelink.  You can download the brochure above, or request a paper copy from Mrs. Carol Johnson at 731-661-5057 or cljohnso@uu.edu.  This travel insurance may be purchased by mail, phone, fax, or online (see brochure for details).

Cost & Payment

The base price of the trip is $3667, plus a $455 per person charge for airport taxes and customs & security fees imposed by the airline.  A non-refundable deposit of $300 is due upon registration with Travelink.  You may pay Travelink in $500 installments on the third of each month after initial registration.  Final payment of the outstanding balance is due in full on November 3, 2008.  Travelink will send you monthly statements with your account balance.

This fee covers airfare, ground transportation (coach, rail, and water transport in Venice), lodging, breakfasts, dinners, and all entrance fees.  You will need to take some extra money for lunches and of course for any gifts or souvenirs.

Note:  This does NOT include tuition fees if you are registering for course credit.

Point of Departure

The group will meet at the Memphis airport.  You will be responsible for getting yourself there and getting home from there.

Course Credit

The Arts in Western Civilization (ART 210), World Literature I and II (ENG 201 and 202), and Walking for Fitness (PEWS 108) will be offered in conjunction with this study abroad experience.  You can take these courses in any combination (exception:  you may choose one or the other literature course, but not both).  Some preliminary coursework will be completed during the preceding fall semester, and some kind of writing assignment(s) will likely be required during the trip itself.  Dr. Veltman will offer Art 210 in an online format.  Dr. Fant will schedule class sessions and/or online activities for World Lit. I and II and will provide a reading list in advance.  Ms. Julie Powell will administer Walking for Fitness, though will not participate in the trip itself.  For Walking for Fitness, you will need a good quality pedometer and will be required to keep a walking log during the trip.

Feel free to contact the professors for more information about any of these courses:

Dr. Veltman:  jveltman@uu.edu
Dr. Fant:  gfant@uu.edu
Ms. Powell:  jpowell@uu.edu

If you do not want to take a course, you may still particpate in the study tour.

Passport

You will need a valid passport.  Be sure to check its expiration date.  It must be valid for six months past the time of travel (i.e., until July 19, 2009).  It can take several weeks to receive or renew your passport, so don't delay!
